PlayStation Neo launch confirmed 7 September

The new, high-powered PlayStation Neo will very likely be unveiled in September.

The new device is thought to support 4K games and media. It will also come with more processing power, with the PlayStation VR headset in particular thought to benefit.
The PlayStation 4.5 (or NEO as it's been codenamed) is a pretty unique beast. Mid-generation console hardware refreshes are nothing new. The first PlayStation had the PSOne refresh, and both the PS2 and PS3 had slim versions that came out a couple of years after the initial console.
The PS4.5 is a little different from what we've seen in the past. Instead of just slimming down the console and maybe using some more power-efficient components, Sony is making some substantial upgrades to the hardware itself.

PS4 Neo specs - how powerful is it compared to the existing PS4?

While Digital Foundry goes into more detailed specifics in its PS4 Neo specs analysis, in summary, expect a CPU overclock over the x86 cores in the original PS4 system; a bandwidth increase to memory that, while doesn't scale too well with the 31% CPU increase, provides a 512MB memory increase for games in Neo-mode; and what's described as the “most exciting aspect”, a sizable GPU boost most likely based on upcoming Polaris AMD technology.
